Tory Johnson Job Hunt Resources – Some Good, Some Not So Good
Last summer I wrote a review on Tory Johnson’s womenforhire.com website. It’s a good resource. Around the same time, I commented on a story she aired on her Good Morning, America Job Hunt Club. (Click here for that one.) It provided great advice for older job hunters. I definitely recommended it for helping job hunters get through the struggle.
Unfortunately, I CANNOT say the same for her Fired to Hired: Bouncing Back from Job Loss to Get to Work Right Now. Is it a horrible book? No way. Is it great resource every job hunter should make sure and read? Not exactly. It’s just Ok.
If it were anyone else, I might be a little more forgiving, Here’s the way I see it. Tory Johnson:
- works with Diane Sawyer (or whoever else is at the front of GMA now),
- has access to what should be a decent budget,
- knows all the right people in the news business (you would hope so anyway) and
- gets support from researchers and who knows may others at GMA and ABC News.
There’s absolutely no excuse for her not having anything but the absolute best job hunter guide around.
Someone like Tory Johnson has options. Should could have easily asked someone like Richard Nelson Bolles, author of “What Color Is Your Parachute? 2010: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers,” to co-author a book with her. (Do a Career Jockey search on Richard Nelson Bolles or Parachute for a ton of posts on material he produces for job hunters.) She could put her name on a book co-written by anyone of the hundreds (maybe even thousands) of good career professionals in the NYC area alone.
And I’m not alone in my opinion. Take a look at the 11 reader comments on Amazon.com for the book. Sure, if you read the overall numbers the book rates high, but read the specific comments. They aren’t all that positive. And how come only 11 people have even commented on the book. That should tell it all.
As can tell, I’m a little passionate about helping out of work people. I can tell you it honestly bugs me to see these folks duped into buying something that’s just ho hum. If you take a look at my job hunt basics e-course (it’s free) you’ll see I recommend several job hunt books. Each one of those blows away Tory’s.
(BTW, Jeannette Kraar’s book “Breakthrough: I Hate My Job, Need a Life, Got Laid Off, Can’t Get No Satisfaction Solution” is one of those. You can download it right off our site and start reading it in about 2 minutes. Click here to get the details. I make some spare change off this if you make the purchase. It helps me pay for the web hosting.)
In any case, I’d like for you job hunters to have nothing but the top resources at your disposal so you can get back to work fast. Tory Johnson despite her Good Morning, America credentials fell short with her Fired to Hired.
Hope this helps.

I’ll be as nice as I can. When Tory Johnson is not on camera or in front of her adoring fans, she is a condescending and moody diva. She has a short fuse and is very demanding. I saw her at one of her job fairs. Wow, what PR can do for your image.
Kathy, Thanks for your feedback. No need to appologize. I’ve never met her. Does anyone else have some feedback either good or bad?
Same experience as Kathy. She has a cult like following but I would be more interested in her ROI. I have come across her a couple of times and surprised by how unprofessional and moody she was, quite a negative experience.
