What a concept…… becoming unattainable for some degree of time.

I was looking around a website belonging to Harrison Barnes, the Job Guru, and caught his article “The Importance of Disconnecting from Your Work.” That’s exactly what he’s promoting and I can only say, “He’s right on.”

Check out the opening lines of his post:

Some of the happiest, most well adjusted, and most effective people I know are also people who have a profound ability to disconnect from their work. They can disconnect rapidly and put themselves in another state of mind which does not involve work.

It’s interesting how he uses the word “profound” to describe this skill. I know what he’s talking about. I’m driven. Those that know me understand I run a million miles a minute, answer emails late at night / early in the morning. I’m at it all hours of the day and it does take a “profound ability” or more like an act of God to get me disconnected.

Now you job hunting executives are no exception to this “disease,” but you’ve got it worse. You don’t have a defined work schedule. Even a crazy, highly-driven work schedule has on and off time built into it. I could be the off time are hard to find, but you know when you’re on work and off.

When you’re looking for work, it becomes your full time job working out of the house. You run into the same problems typical of small business owners encounter working out of home. If you can fall out of bed and start hitting the computer the minute you open your eyes. If you research, fine tune the resume and scan the Internet well past Late Night with David Letterman (or Jay Leno for those fans), when do you disconnect from work?

Let me tell you. You have to be at your creative best during your job hunt. You actually have to be pleasant when interacting with possible contacts that can lead you to your next employer. You have to be open to subtle opportunities that might pop out at you during your day. You cannot do that well and be at your very best if you work 24/7 and never get any mental rest.

Here’s a word of advice. Get yourself on a schedule. Pretend you have a work day and schedule your time accordingly. Set the times when you’re laptop will be open for emails and when you’ll accept Blackberry (it really is a Crackberry) phone calls and text. You’ve got the time. Schedule working out into your schedule. If it’s getting up to run before or after you drop the kids off at school (hey you can do that now that you’re off work), going to the gym at a set time or attending Yoga or spinning classes at a set time, commit to doing it.

You owe it to yourself and more importantly, it will:

Relieve stress

Keep you more centered (meaning you won’t freak out at everyone as often)

Improve your effectiveness and efficiency (You really will get more work done.)

To keep yourself honest, share whatever commitment you make with your spouse, friend or coach (that’s where folks like me come in) and do what you say you’ll do.

This should be a help now when you’re looking for work and later when you land your next position which just might be around the corner.

A sensitive but timely topic in the media is about those in important and powerful positions who abuse their status and role, and intentionally or not, violate the moral and civil codes of ethics, and yet expect to be exonerated because of who they are and what they do. Take a look at “Rash of Scandals Tests Democrats at Sensitive Time” to get the details on the dirt.

The above is premised on a recent New York byline regarding the NYS Governor, among other politicians, who finds himself embroiled in an alleged conspiracy to dissipate supposed criminal acts committed by one of his staff. The case of a top aide to the Governor, accused of domestic violence against his partner, and the Governor’s alleged role in attempting to influence and quite possibly intimidate the accuser. (See Times “Paterson’s Ethics Breach Is Turned Over to Prosecutors” for the details on this. )

Stories, some in fact, hold that the Governor requested members of his staff to approach the accuser and advise her to drop the charges, in order, one would believe, to obviate and/or protect his aide from criminal charges. One can assume that the Governor feels a certain sense of loyalty to his staff. He might even believe the charges to be unfounded. Even if all this were true, why would he knowingly impede a legal process using his position of authority and influence? Could it be that he believes himself to be above or beyond the common law? More importantly, and irrespective of the legal and right thing to do, did he forget what happened to his predecessor when then Governor Spitzer knowingly and willingly committed a federal crime? Thus, I would opine, is the present state of our ethical standards.

It takes me back to last week’s article on clueless CEOs. Maybe they are not as clueless as we are led to believe. As one CEO stated, the core values ought to be honesty, integrity as well as job security. Possibly, given their financial power, they believe themselves to be exempt from the first two but not the third. Heaven forbid they are vilified for their wrongful acts. Ironically, they take this as a personal affront. (Case in point, former presidential candidate John Edwards). The belief that because they hold positions of power, and can (and do) financially affect large-scale (even global) outcomes (not all good), gives them carte blanche or a free pass to commit illegal acts, is not only wrongly premised, it is legally incorrect. A strong statement yes, but not a wrong or misguided one, I would argue.

Admittedly, even with media information, we may never know the entire truth to any of these acts, but one aspect of this process is very clear, there was, even if at a small scale, an abuse of power. I would further premise it is based on arrogance and not lack of knowledge. For no fully informed individual would or ought to believe otherwise.

Our laws provide that one is innocent until proven guilty. However, this does not imply and for that matter, state, that you can willingly, knowingly and intentionally ignore such laws to benefit yourself or those close to you. Even when the facts and documents support the fact those wrongful acts have been committed, these individuals still insist on ignoring the law, and worst yet, be excused from proper legal repercussions or just compensation.

A company’s corporate social responsibility plan as well as its mission statement holds (or ought to) not only its employees but its officers and senior executives to a strong and valid standard of fairness, obedience to and regulation of the laws as it relates to the business and related activities. Politicians are elected with, not only the implied but stated obligation, to enact as well as represent the laws of the land, ethically and morally.

Whatever the causes, one important solution is that we, as the general public, need to hold accountable those in important and far-reaching positions for their intended misdeeds. I would further argue that such holders of power and influence ought to be held to an even higher standard, for their acts (good or bad) have long and widespread repercussions, not unlike the financial and unemployment difficulties, we are presently faced with. Most importantly, we must re-align the moral and ethical compass, which has been pointing in the wrong direction for some time. Moreover, apply it across the board (pun intended) and at all levels, equally and fairly.

You get her talking about any one of our three daughters (one of her favorite topics in the world) and she’s on a role. You want details. She has them. You have to realize, she goes way back with these folks.

My wife’s a lovely lady. You got to meet her. Today we visited the dean at the high school my daughter will attend this fall. Now you have to picture my wife. You get her talking about any one of our three daughters (one of her favorite topics in the world) and she’s on a role. You want details. She has them. You have to realize, she goes way back with these folks.

I wasn’t able to get a word in during today’s meeting, but then again, I was having fun watching and listening to her storytelling. My wife explained how tutoring improved her reading, how her older sister’s getting along since graduating (she attended the same school), and how our oldest one is preparing for her upcoming college graduation. (She graduates in two months. Wow! How time flies.)

When she talks about our girls, she lights up. The storyteller in her unwinds and even though I know how the story turns out (they’re my kids too you know), I can’t get enough of it.

My renewed attitude surprises me. It wasn’t always like this. When we met, my wife’s storytelling made her a super date, an interesting companion and a person I could chitchat with for hours. Next to her eyes and particularly well formed backside, it’s one the things I love most about her.

It was also something that later in our relationship caused me some trouble. It wasn’t so much anything she did. It’s how I opted to respond to it. I remember cringing a bit when she got too conversational. In professional settings like this morning, I’d be concerned about the other person’s time. “Did they have things to do or other meetings to attend?” My response then could be simple impatience, but it could also be cutting her off by steering the conversation towards where it “officially” needed to go. I’d leave her mid-sentence, mid-story, where ever. I definitely her severely unappreciated by this a clueless husband. Not good.

In hindsight, I figured out the problem. I realized the problem had nothing to do with her. It’s that I wanted her to be more like me. Since I, of course, have all the answers, she’d be better off following my example. (I’m fairly gifted in so many ways…right!) I guess you could say I was a sort of arrogant bastard (sorry Mom). Fortunately, I’ve learned a little bit over the years. I’ve mellowed out some and seen that being like me is probably not what I want out of her anyway.

So what’s this have to do with getting a job and keeping your career on track? Well, I have found (maybe you have too) that during my job hunt or when I’ve been less than satisfied with my career, I lack patience. Things I might otherwise appreciate or pleasantly tolerate during less stressful times (like the interesting way she forgets to give me her ATM receipts), don’t seem nearly as endearing.

In a nutshell, the differences that brought us together become the qualities that pull us apart.

I remember a job hunter and his wife whose differences became apparent during his search. He’s a laid back and easygoing. He’s an optimist who brings that disposition to his job hunting. His wife is a bit more intense and results oriented. She was eager to get this job hunt over with soon so they could return to the security of a steady paycheck.

I could feel tension when I spoke with him. I could see her asking him about his job hunt A LOT. “How many contacts did you call today? Did you get return phone calls?” (Guys call that nagging.) The differences in their slants became very apparent.

Now we all have our ways. We come from different places and different upbringings. At some point, our journey intersects with someone else and it’s at that point when we must decide to either accept or not accept them. If we’re marry to someone, we’ve already decided to accept them. It’s a bygone conclusino. It’s in the past. The real job then is to get on with the tough part which is taking actions supporting that decision.

In my example, I had some choices to make. I could be disrespectful in front of others and prevent her from being her true self. I could let her be and quietly simmer inside hoping she’ll someday “come to her senses.” (Take a look at my Love Dare article where I talk about the causes for this inner simmering and angst.)

What I could also decide was to cherish her exactly as she came from the factory. I could be completely and sincerely let her be.

You know what? I can also take another step. I can appreciate, enjoy and even fall in love with her all the more because of her unique individuality and grow in my intimacy with her. This is a very interesting option.

My wife and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. I’m signed up for another 25 and I think she is too. I’m looking forward to the adventure that follows where I can allow her to spread her wings as she wishes to do so and let her become not so much the person I want her to become, but the person her creator wants her to be. I’m sure he has a better plan than than I do.

Hope this helps.

Here’s a question I get in one form or another almost every week: “I’ve sent out 50 resumes and not had any job interviews. What’s wrong with my resume?”
Answer: There may indeed be a problem with your resume, and I’ve been writing about effective resumes for more than 10 years, so I invite you to Google that subject to learn what I think.
But wait.
If you’re sending resumes to employers and not getting callbacks, there may be two other problems you’re overlooking: sending resumes to the wrong person, and sending them ...

But wait.

If you’re sending resumes to employers and not getting callbacks, there may be two other problems you’re overlooking: sending resumes to the wrong person, and sending them the wrong way.

Let’s tackle each of these “hidden” problems, which can derail your job search as quickly as a defective resume can …

Problem 1: Are you sending your resumes to the wrong person?

If so, the best resume in the world won’t help you.

In most cases, the wrong person to send a resume to is anyone in human resources. Because HR people — God bless ‘em — specialize in saying no.

Example: They reject your resume because it matches only 8 of 10 job requirements. Or the 24-year-old junior HR staffer reading your resume fails to understand your value because they have never seen anyone do what you do.

Solution: Send your resume to people who can say yes.

By yes, I mean the authority to create a job for you, or tell HR to schedule an interview with you. These “yes people” — also known as hiring managers — are of two types.

In a larger company, the hiring manager to send a resume to is at least one level above the person you would work for. Reason? If you apply directly to your potential boss, that person may see you as a threat to their job and toss your resume. To avoid this, contact your potential boss’ boss, or go two levels higher. In most cases, this means you will apply to a division VP.

The second type of hiring manager to target is found in smaller companies, with no HR department and fewer than 50 people. In most cases, it’s the president or owner.

No matter whom you contact, do what it takes to find the correct spelling of their name, their title, and their mailing address. Search online at Google, Linkedin, or ZoomInfo.com. Or pick up the phone and call the receptionist, or call someone you know at one of that employer’s clients, vendors, or competitors.

Problem 2: Are you sending your resumes the wrong way?

If you’ve been sending resumes by email, the answer is a big, fat YES. Email is absolutely the wrong way to send anything important to anyone, ever.

Solution: Print your resume on paper and mail it in an envelope, with a stamp.

Better solution: Print your resume and hand-deliver it during a meeting you arrange with the hiring manager to discuss her/his problems and the solutions you can offer.

Now.

As a child, I ate copious amounts of library paste. And among the many strange side effects is this: I can read minds.

So I know you still have questions. Actually, you have two questions …

Question #1: The company I want to work for isn’t hiring people with my qualifications or has a hiring freeze. I’m stuck, right?

Wrong.

Every day, employees quit, die, get fired, or retire. In my experience, up to 25% of workers leave a typical company annually. In a firm with 100 workers, that’s 25 people departing every year — one job opening every two weeks.

Which means there will always be a need for self-directed, problem-solving employees at any company, in any city, in any economy.

That’s where you come in.

By proactively contacting and putting yourself “top of mind” with hiring managers today, you can set yourself up for a job interview tomorrow, when they find themselves unexpectedly in need of employees.

Better yet, you can get a job created for you by far-sighted hiring managers who want to snap you up before their competition does.

Question #2: The job posting says to apply online or has an HR contact to send the resume to. I’m stuck, right?

Wrong.

Sure, you should follow requirements on any job posting. But nowhere is it written that you can’t exceed requirements. Think extra credit here.

You should still apply directly to a hiring manager — not HR — with a printed resume and cover letter, mailed in an envelope, with a stamp.

In your cover letter, include words to this effect: I’ve applied online as directed, but with spam filters and other technical snafus that might pop up, I wanted to make absolutely sure you saw my qualifications on paper, Ms./Mr. Hiring Manager.

Now, go out and make your own luck!

I got this from someone in an email a long while back. I keep stuff much longer than most do only so I can use it for writing fodder someday in the future. Well I ran into this one and the day came for this one. Watch out! (BTW, it came with no author, so if it’s yours claim it and I’ll give you credit.

Here’s what it says:

THE BUZZARD: If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

THE BAT: The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

THE BUMBLEBEE: A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

PEOPLE: In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up! That’s the answer, the escape route and the solution to any problem! Just look up.

Now I’m no National Geographic expert so I don’t know if all this stuff is true, but the message rings loud and clear for me.

A job seach is rarely easy. We spend time struggling, intensely focused and typically consumed by the job search. Even if there’s no financial pressure and the relationship with the spouse is doing well, we have our ego to deal with. We have to face the idea of staying home with little to do. That all can be a little nerve racking works hard against the clear thinking that creatively helps us move forward.

This is probably a good time to reflect on the animal story above. Are you banging your head real hard against wall (Ouch!) and missing out on an obvious next job search step?

If that is the case, her are some “look up ideas” for you to consider:

Meet with a former co-worker, boss or peer (coffee’s fine) and ask them for ideas to fuel your job hunt.

Ask a fellow job hunter to look over your situation and suggest ideas. (It’s amazing what one job hunter can do for another job hunter’s search.)

Consider a job coach. Many of them will give you a free initial coaching session (like a test drive) to try it out. I do.

Go to the gym, go for a run or even just a brisk walk.

Get yourself a book like Richard Nelson Bolles’ What Color’s Your Parachute? or my own Breakthrough: The Hate My Job, Need a Life, Got Laid Off, Can’t Get No Satisfaction Solution to help see your situation differently. (You can learn more about my book on my product page.)

Read an excite novel or rent yourself an intense movie. (Braveheart is my favorite.) After one of these, I feel refreshed, reflective and more creative. (And enjoy these now. When you get back to work you won’t have as much time to do this kind of stuff.)

Schedule yourself some do nothing time away from the Blackberry, laptop and email. Take it easy.

Take a simple walk with the spouse and/or kids. Sometimes just some simple relationship time can help us screw our heads back on straight and get out of our rut.

Again, I know it’s not easy, but if you try something different, keep yourself sharp and stay creative you can do a better job searching for work then you would otherwise.

Share the stuff that works for you so the rest of us can learn from it.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the episodes of “The Undercover Boss” I’ve watched. The well-to-do CEO shrugs off the golf clubs, chic expensive cars, cushy lifestyle, expensive suits and jewelry, even if only for a week, to mingle and, alas, work alongside their company’s employees.
Talk about timing given the bad press some other CEOs have been receiving particularly during and post senate hearings. How can they expect sympathy when they have the audacity to show up in corporate jets, whining about how they cannot afford to not pay bonuses ...

How can they expect sympathy when they have the audacity to show up in corporate jets, whining about how they cannot afford to not pay bonuses to executives who have been, almost single-handedly, the ruination of millions of Americans and their hard-earned savings and retirement funds, for fear that they will leave? Guess that is worse than firing thousands who depend on their weekly paychecks just to survive? I think we all can agree many of us would not feel their loss!

Ah, but back to the sympathetic, and recently enlightened CEOs who now not only know the name but the lives of those they employ. It is not difficult to become emotionally attached to the mother/grandmother, who works at 711 while receiving dialysis, or the single mom who manages a Hooters restaurant with motherly concern, or the CEO who finally gets his pink slip when he cannot keep up with an amazing yet ill employee during a sanitation run.

Nevertheless, let us take a pause here. Why did it take the mass layoffs, the shutdown of some major American companies, and a country in the most unimaginable financial crisis since the Great Depression, to finally have the CEOs leave their glass houses and venture into the “real” world? Do I dare say, too little too late?

Yes, I would. However, at the same time, I want to say “about time”! There is a sense of justice when you see how emotional these CEOs get when they experience the extreme pressure employees face on a daily basis. The realization that it is not just to keep their jobs, but to make a living for themselves and their families, are their employees’ constant struggle. It gives one faith to see that there is still some humanity left in those we have labeled self-important, self-centered and oblivious to the reality of our present financial state.

Is it enough? One has to hope that the lessons they learn from this brief juncture will carryover into the executive board meetings and forecasted as well projected project plans. I for one would like to have the other members of the senior management do the same, as part of their “training”. Yes, they have the burden to manage and run a company of multiple employees but they also need to appreciate the value that each employee brings to the big picture not just the bottom line. One CEO observed that even supervisors need to step in once in awhile …hmmm.

Interestingly, the CEOs of this show are those whose parents or grandparents came from humble beginnings. Could be why these CEOs are out in the workforce to get more insight. One such executive even received an earful from the general public when querying them as to the perception of his company. Talk about an eye-opening moment.

This show does not focus on the misery but more importantly on the dedication, hard work and optimistic view of its employees. One such employee reminds himself and, unbeknown to him, his employer how much it means to live the American dream, even at the cost of not seeing his wife and family during the week due to his work schedule. Yet he smiles and reminds us how important it is to spend quality not quantity time with our loved ones. Same message the CEO took away.

The intro to the show states that the public believes these CEOs to be out of touch … most definitely. Now they are taking extreme action … I beg to differ. To live one week like the average person is not extreme. As for action, that only depends on lessons learned, and what they will implement to address the needs of the employees, fairly and timely. Like one CEO states, the core of his company is integrity, honesty, and job security. Now if we can get those in government and major industries to be part of this process, then maybe, just maybe, we can have something, and more importantly someone, to believe in. A girl can dreamJ

Let me know what you think about this program and CEOs in general. Are they all bad? Are they getting a bad rap?

Leading a team of people on any project can be a bear. Running a small business with differing skills, personalities, backgrounds, genders and competing interests can be just plain difficult. It seems like piling any group of people together in hopes of getting a job done is a hopeless cause. But if you:

develop a keen understanding of how individuals behave within a team and

you’ll develop a reputation for being a team leading genius that delivers the results your company badly needs.

Leading a team of people on any project can be a bear. Running a small business with differing skills, personalities, backgrounds, genders and competing interests can be just plain difficult. It seems like piling any group of people together in hopes of getting a job done is a hopeless cause. But if you:

develop a keen understanding of how individuals behave within a team and

dearn to motivate individuals towards a common goal

you’ll develop a reputation for being a team leading genius that delivers the results your company badly needs.

To hone these skills I recommend three books, all within an arm’s length of my desk chair. They will give you insight into the leadership and necessary team building skills you need in any organization bigger than 2.

Book #1: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable

I wrote my Five Dysfunctions: Root Causes for Corporate Illness last Spring. This book is a quick read, but don’t let the fact that its short hold you back. It defines a pyramid for explaining the forces at work within individuals on a team. Some forces work towards binding the team together and getting it to strive towards a common goal. Others work right against it in favor of individual agendas that probably won’t help anyone but that one person.

For those of you new to managing people, experienced but troubled by team performance issues or just someone wanting a refresher on how to run a good team, this is the right book.

Book #2: Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box

You can find my review of this book at Leadership and Self Deception: Perfect for Identifying Imperfections. This book forced me to look at myself as others see me and identify the shortcomings that can stand in the way of my becoming a strong leader. Self deception could be blocking you like a fog preventing you from seeing what everyone around you knows, but is afraid or unwilling to tell you. What a huge dilemma walking around like a naked emperor with no clothes.

This isn’t a difficult book to read. Like the Five Dysfunctions, it’s written in fable form, but is a bit longer. As the corporate orientation educates a newbee employee on the problems with self deception, you get the education yourself. The book not only helps you diagnose any problem in yourself, but suggests ways to combat them.

It led me to put myself through a management and leadership 360 degree assessment which was a real eye opener to me and help me make changes to do better.

Don’t pretend this book isn’t for you. It is.

Book #3: Now, Discover Your Strengths

I reviewed this book in Now, Discover Your Strengths” Helps You Do Just That. This book describes 34 possible strengths and includes an assessment you can take online to figure one which are your strengths. (Note: If you buy a used copy from someone that took the assessment, you will not be able to get yours done. This is the biggest value of the book so beware when buying used copies.)

The book works off the thinking that if you can identify your strengths, you can work to maximize how you use them at work and in your personal life. As I mention in my book reviews, I used the book with my IT department a few years back and got great results. The best part is we didn’t have budgets for expensive team building seminars and this got us some pretty good results for the price of the books.

You should consider this for yourself and for your team.

(Note: Since you have to buy new copies of this book, get ‘em by clicking on the links in the banners or in the Amazon ads in my reviews. Help me make a few bucks – more like pennies – will ya?)

Hope this helps.
