Here’s my story.

My wife decided that we should move from Sydney to Singapore after the birth of our daughter as she was finding it hard coping alone. At this time, I was also kind of getting bored at work as most of the work was done in the US HQ and I had very little to do. But they were happy to keep me doing basically nothing!

My wife got a job in Singapore first so we left Sydney in Dec 2008 and her new company helped us to settle down quite comfortably. I also arranged some contract work that I could do remotely knowing well that the job market has really dried up.

I kept sending resumes and kept revising my cv hoping I would get a response. Unfortunately for me none came and I really began to doubt my abilities and had to do a lot of soul searching. I attended some free government sponsored programmes but they didn’t led me anywhere. In Jul 09, a French recruitment company set me up with an interview at a French company and I was able to get a offer letter from them. After signing, they told me I will have to wait a month as the boss was on leave. So I waited a month and then another two weeks hoping to start work. But it didn’t work out and they told me they have pulled the plug on the job and so I basically had to start all over again.

Finally, after job hunting for more than 8 months, in Aug 09 I got lucky and got called for an interview. Though I will be taking a slight pay cut, I am happy that I got the job and working again. This was such a low time for me and I really couldn’t have coped if it weren’t for my wife and the joyous smiles from my daughter.

I don’t know if I can offer any advice to anybody other than not to loose hope when things just don’t go your way.

Gotta Stay Positive: Job Searchers are told to stay positive in the face of rejection, it’s not you – it’s the economy, etc. How do you keep on keepin’ on when employers don’t even acknowledge that you applied for the job?
